Ditra
Owen didn’t exactly lie—everything is different.
Translation: everything is worse.
Owen’s grief over almost losing us morphs into rage like I’ve never seen before. I’d let my emotions get the best of me. If only I ever did what he said. I’m reckless and irresponsible. I almost got us both killed.
“You knew I was driving,” I argue back, doing my best to keep my tone of voice level, so he’ll listen to me. “You knew I had Brandy. You shouldn’t have sent those text messages.”
“You’re justifying what you did?” He corners me and I start to shake. “You’re unhinged.”
“You’re scaring me.”
He doesn’t lay a hand on me, though. He says, “You’re the dangerous one, Ditra”—leveling me with dark eyes—“and I need to take Brandy away from you.” I’d rather he pummeled me with a fist.
“No!”
Brandy cries when he goes to her room and lifts her out of her crib. She always cries when he picks her up. That’s also my fault.
I shouldn’t say it. I do anyway. “She didn’t cry when Blaze held her.”
“Blaze?” Now he really looks furious, storming around for his keys while Brandy wails in his arms. “Who the hell is Blaze?”
“The firefighter who…who saved us.”
In more ways than one.
“A firefighter,” he deadpans. “Named Blaze. Do you hear yourself? You need to be on medication, Ditra.”
My stomach clenches. Maybe he’s right? No. No, Blaze was real. That was his name. I saw it—
“He left me his business card. Did you—you. You threw it away. You. Threw. It. Ah-way.” Heat blooms across my chest. But I can still see it. If I just focus…just concentrate on the image…
There. Furneaux City Fire Department. That was it. He was a sergeant. No. A lieutenant. Lieutenant Blaze. I can still hear his voice.
‘Count on it,’ he said. I can count on him.
‘Do you even know how gorgeous you are?’
“That trash you left in your hospital gown?” Owen’s nasally speech is like nails on a chalkboard compared to the sound of Blaze’s warm, masculine voice in my head.
You’re the trash, Owen, I want to say. And you’re not going to get away with this.
I smile my own Cheshire grin. “Maybe you’re right.” I make a thoughtful “hm” sound and arrange my face. “I suddenly have such a craving for pizza—maybe it’s the pain meds messing with me.” I stride toward my cellphone on top of the dresser in our room.
My room. It will be.
Owen puts Brandy back in her crib, and she stops crying. He makes a gruff noise of satisfaction.
He says, “Order two.”
